Here is where I'll be putting the specifics of my current and next actual address, etc.

This site was established when I was moving a lot (a work rotation program). During the rotations, the blog was a means of keeping my friends and family up to date as to where I was and what I was doing. Now, I have settled in Davis and all the references to "current location" and "next location" and such are meaningless, except as historical side notes. So, I pulled the references to Time Off-sets and Enchange rates from the front page of this site and moved them here. This whole page is now pretty much obsolete, but it costs nothing to leave it up rather than delete it. So, here is the outdated Travel Details information:
Here are the time offsets from universal standard time:
California, USA = UST - 8 hrs
North Carolina, USA = UST - 5 hrs
England = UST + 0 hrs
Denmark = UST + 1 hrs
China = + 8 hrs
So, if you are going to call me from the east coast of the US, and you
decided to call me at 7 PM your time, then it would be 12 AM Universal
Standard Time and, therefore, 4 PM in California, 1 AM in Denmark, and
8 AM in China.
Since Daylight Savings Time is not universally observed, then the above
calculation might be off by an hour during the summer.
Here are some approximate exchange rates:
10 USD = ~56.3 DKK = ~7.57 EUR = ~81 CNY
10 DKK = ~1.78 USD = ~1.34 EUR = ~13.37 CNY
10 EUR = ~13.2 USD = ~74.4 DKK = ~99.7 CNY
10 CNY = ~1.23 USD = ~7.48 DKK = ~1.0 EUR
Here's the very rough time-line of where I'll be and when:
1 September 2004 to 14 March 2005: Davis, California, USA - working for NZBT, under DSY, in Protein Chemistry
15 March 2005 to 13 September 2005: Bagsvaerd, Denmark - working for NZAS, under TVB, in Protein Design
14 September 2005 to 14 March 2006: Franklinton, North Carolina, USA - working for NZNA, under PLIN, in Application Technology
15 March 2006 to 5 September 2006: Beijing, China - working for NZCN, under CLAU, in Application Screening
6 September 2006 to 14 December 2006 permanent: Davis, California, USA - working for NZCA, final location
15 December 2006 to June 2007: Bagsvaerd, Denmark - working for NZAS, under HANS, in ADU (cereal) Foods
My current address is temporary and my official "home" address remains the office address. So, don't update your address books, just continue to send mail to:

USA
I have moved into this condo. The address is visible, because that is where I am staying, but crossed out because I want to make it clear that this should not be used as my mailing address. All mail should continue to go through my work address.

Calling from the US, you'll want to dial 011 then the country code (45 for Denmark or 86
for China) then the number.
If you are trying to make a call from Denmark or China to the US, then the procedure is to dial
00 then 1 + area code + telephone number.
For most countries other than the US, pattern used is
00 then country code + area code + telephone number.
Taiwan is a bit of an odd duck on the international calling scene; it's country code is 886 rather than the usual two-digit code. Also, when calling from Taiwan to the US, it is 002 then 1 + area code + telephone number, rather than the more usual 00.
I have listed my phone numbers in the right hand colum of the site entry page, including the country code in front, but I'll list 'em here as well, in the above "Current location information" section, just to be thorough.
Daylight savings time only occurs half the year and is not observed in all countries. It complicates things, so I will be ignoring it in the below discussions.
On the time side of things, there is GMT (Greenwich Mean Time, aka UCT/UTC/Universal/Zulu), UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, same as GMT),CET (Central European Time, UTC + 1 hour), MEZ (Mitteleuropäische Zeit, same as CET), EST (Eastern Standard Time, UTC - 5 hours), PST (Pacific Standard Time, UTC - 8 hours), ChST (Chinese Standard Time, UTC + 8 hours), and a pile of other time abbreviations.
One thing that people may find a bit confusing is the fact that the zero point of UST is exactly on the opposite side of the globe from the international date line.
Out of the locations I will be posted, the one closest to the west side of the international date line (thus the "first" in a new day) is China (UST+8), then Denmark (UST+1), then the US east coast (UST-5), then the US west coast (UST-8). All these various numbers may let you calculate, after some head scratching, that, if it is 1 PM in Denmark, then it is 8 PM in China, 7 AM on the US east coast, and 4 AM on the US west coast.
Unfortunately, all this time figuring is prone to confusion and mixing things up when you suddenly realize you may be calling across the international date line...
To resolve this, I have constructed the following table giving calling locations and reasonable calling time windows (i.e. not having any call be later than 11 PM or earlier than 7 AM for any given location).
| Calling | From Time | Calling | To Time | Differential | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| China | 2PM-11PM | Denmark | 7AM- 4PM | minus 7 | ||
| China | 7AM-12 noon | US East | 6PM-11PM | add 11 & change day | ||
| China | 8PM-11PM | US East | 7AM-10AM | minus 13 | ||
| China | 7AM- 3PM | US West | 3PM-11PM | add 8 & change day | ||
| China | 11PM | US West | 7AM | minus 16 | ||
| Denmark | 1PM-11PM | US East | 7AM- 5PM | minus 6 | ||
| Denmark | 4PM-11PM | US West | 7AM- 2PM | minus 9 | ||
| US East | 10AM-11PM | US West | 7AM- 8PM | minus 3 |
Here are the times and dates around the globe, at the time this page was loaded:
California, USA =
Wednesday, 03 December 2008 07:19 PM
North Carolina, USA =
Wednesday, 03 December 2008 10:19 PM
Denmark =
Thursday, 04 December 2008 04:19 AM
China =
Thursday, 04 December 2008 11:19 AM
Er, keep in mind that China does not use daylight savings time, therefore (since
the server doing these calculations is in California) the time calculated for
China is one hour off. China should now be 12 hours offset from the east coast of
the US instead of 13 hours offset.

that the nice people at the front desk want to know not only the number you are calling,
but also the name... Er, they think my name is "Alan" or "Mr. Alan", which can complicate
things if you don't know you are calling Alan. I think this comes from my passport,
which reads "McCall, Keith Alan", leading them to conclude that my last name is Alan and
my first name is McCall.
